Give your summer hair some LOVE!

With all the fun things to do outdoors during the summer, our hair can take a beating. Most of us don't think about how vulnerable our color treated hair is when it comes to becoming dry, damaged and faded from the elements.

If you can't keep your hair dry and covered when enjoying the outdoors, here are a few tips to keep your hair looking its best!

Sun exposure:

Protecting your hair from the sun is so important! Just like with your skin, the sunshine heat and uv rays can cause color to fade along with dryness and damage.  A hat is always best, but when not convenient, use a leave in with uv filters to protect and moisturize.

Speaking of sunscreens, products with self- tanners and avobenzone can actually change the color of your hair (especially extensions!!) and cause a permanent change. Grab a mineral based product for the health of your hair, skin and the environment!

Chlorine and salt exposure:

If you must get in the water, rinse your hair with clean water first so that the hair soaks up the fresh water to prevent minerals from absorbing as heavily.  It's even better to put conditioner in and braid your hair so that the minerals aren’t as readily absorbed.  If you're ready to get out of the water, but wanna hang outside, rinse your hair again to remove minerals, add a leave in conditioner and comb through. This will keep your hair from drying without the chlorine and salt causing build up, fadage and dryness. When you're in for a shower, use a gentle clarifier first and follow up with your regular shampoo and conditioner. Use a mask periodically to add more nutrition!

Wind:

We all love to let our hair blow in the wind whether on the beach or favorite beach ride. For fragile or finer textures of hair, put in braids, a bun or ponytail to prevent excess tangling. If you leave your hair down, make sure to keep a brush handy and your favorite detangler. Either way, preventing excess tangling will keep your hair healthier so you don't have to use excess force to brush which can cause breakage and frizz.

Humidity:

The southern humidity hits hard, so help combat it by using products that are nourishing and humidity resistant. Also consider using products that are lighter weight in the summertime.  The heavier weight products, especially waxes and hairsprays can cause the hairstyle to "melt" and become sticky when hit with the moisture in the air. Dry products into the hair that have a great memory and soft hold.  Finish with a humidity spray if needed.  Also keratin treatments are a great, non- permanent way to combat the frizz!!
